Yale University

Summary

Yale University, founded in 1701, is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the U.S. This private institution has its headquarters in New Haven, Connecticut, approximately 80 miles northeast of New York City. Approximately 45% of Yale students are undergraduates, and approximately 20% of the overall student population is from outside the U.S., with more than 110 countries represented. The university operates on a semester system, and English is the sole language of instruction. Over 80% of the undergrads reside in on-campus housing, and graduate students also have accommodations available.

Yale encompasses the undergraduate college, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and a number of professional schools. Undergrads favor studying economics, political science, and history. At the graduate level, Yale’s Law School and School of Management are both especially respected. The medical school is affiliated with Yale-New Haven Hospital, which is highly ranked in several specialties. There are also many research centers and institutes at the university, including the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, Yale Cancer Center, and Yale Program in Sleep. Undergraduates have ample opportunities to conduct research—for instance, they can pursue a Yale College Freshman Summer Research Fellowship in the Sciences & Engineering. One of Yale’s greatest contributions to research includes the invention of chemotherapy during the early 1940s.
